Date Night

On Friday night, Lisa and I had a date.  While most people's dates might involve dinner and a movie or long strolls on the beach, ours was a little more simple.  We hadn't had a date night for a while.  It involved a few snacks and a lot of slapping, groaning, sweating, and ball busting.  We also spiced it up with a cheering crowd and masks.  It was the classic battle of good versus evil and who could finish on top.

Yes, that's right. We went to a Lucha Libre match!  Wait.  What were you thinking?

For the uninitiated, Lucha Libre is Mexican wrestling-- like the WWE (or the old WWF), except in Spanish, and most of the wrestlers wear masks.  We had churros and frozen coffee drinks brought to us while we watched characters-- like a drag queen, a lizard man, and a foreign-sounding "Jack Evans" who looked more like Eminem than a wrestler--  pound each other with chairs and hurl themselves around and out of the ring.

Even though there were tons of small Mexican children there cheering on their favorite "luchadores," ours were not, thanks to a kind friend who watched them.  It was definitely for the best.  Our kids don't need any more ideas for beating on each other.

After two and a half hours of wrestling mania, we were falling asleep in the warm arena, so we left.  Since we couldn't hang all the way to the end, we missed the main event between the evil clowns of "Psicho Circus" and the good guys ironically named "Los Perros del Mal."  I guess we are getting old.

Still, I have to say that date night was a success, even if I didn't buy Lisa her own mask for fun at home, as another friend kindly suggested.
