One of the hardest things about life in the Foreign Service is not being with family for important celebrations. Sometimes it's just not feasible to travel thousands of miles with small children to be there for momentous occasions, no matter how much you wish you could be.
Last week, my new nephew, Lukas Lee, was born. At 7 lb 4 oz, 20.5 inches long, Luke was welcomed into the world by a host of family and friends. I'm told he is a content, pleasant baby who never lacks for arms to hold him. But there are at least two pairs of arms in Mexico that ache to cradle him too.
Congratulations to my brother Randy and his wife Jessica on their beautiful baby boy. Though we are not there in person, we are there in spirit, cheering them on as they enter a whole new world of parenting.
And of course, we're not going to let a little thing like 2,420 miles keep us from a photo shoot with Luke.
