29 Again

My birthday seems like the distant past after the whirlwind Fourth of July weekend, but I still think it merits a blog post. Here are the highlights of the good and the bad things about my birthday.

Good: Spending time with my boys. I woke up to sweet birthday greetings from Jacob and Benjy. Jacob had spent the evening before making me a book, and he was excited to give it to me, but he crawled in bed beside me and waited as quietly and as patiently as he could for me to wake up. He still wiggled a lot, and I gave up on sleep after about 10 minutes.

Bad: Benjy helping with my makeup. When I tried to apply my eyeshadow, I discovered that the brush was disgustingly wet. I am hoping that it had only been in Benjy's mouth and not the toilet. Could makeup have possibly tasted better than the uneaten Poptart on the coffee table?

Good: Going to the park with girlfriends and kids, plus visiting French cousin. After grabbing takeout from Wendy's, we all went to the park for a picnic. While the kids played on the playground, I got a surprise from the visiting French cousin, who had composed a birthday message in French, Arabic, German and English. Can you tell I'm blushing in this picture?

Bad: Locking kids in the car. I was chatting with the friends I was dropping off after our park play, when Jacob decided to climb into the front passenger seat of my car, which was running. Benjy and Andrew were still strapped into their car seats. Somehow (because Jacob claims he didn't do it), the car became locked, and Jacob was no longer in it, since he had gotten out to play again, because I was talking too much. I tried both doors on the driver's side and the hatch, but was unsuccessful in finding an unlocked door. I even tried to get Benjy to unlock his door, but he just smiled at me. I guess that was better than him screaming at me. So I yelled at Jacob to keep up and we ran to Oakwood's Leasing Office to get a spare key to our apartment, because I knew that Chris's keys to my car were in it. I impatiently waited for them to make my key, and then took off running with Jacob lagging behind me. I knew it was just a matter of time before one or both of the kids locked in the car started crying. We ran across the courtyard and into our building, taking the stairs to the fourth floor. I slung open the door and saw Chris, who was calling my cell phone, which was also locked in my car. I grabbed his keys off the counter, pushed Jacob toward him, and ran back out the door and down the stairs and across the parking lot, again. I got all the way to the car when I realized that the passenger side window was down and had been down the whole time. Well, that could have been a lot simpler...

Good: Dinner and theater at The Kennedy Center with Chris. One of my friends volunteered to babysit as a birthday gift, so Chris bought theater tickets, and we went to see Completely Hollywood by The Reduced Shakespeare Company. I was totally thrilled since I hadn't seen a play since I graduated from college eight years ago--unless you count Thomas the Tank Engine: The Musical, which I don't. The play was amazingly funny, the Kennedy Center was gorgeous, and my date was witty, charming and handsome. Doesn't he look presidential?

Bad: Dinner doesn't go with my shoes. Before the play, we decided to have a little dinner in the cafe. The only downside to this was that it was cafeteria style and required me to carry a tray, which was ridiculous anyway considering that dinner cost more than any other meal that we've had since our children were born. Unfortunately, I forgot to pack my grace in my handbag, so when I tried to balance my tray on the counter to add a dessert plate, the whole thing came crashing down, covering the front of my dress from the waist down and spilling onto my shoes. Fortunately, I was wearing black, and I was able to wipe most of my pasta off my dress. My pride, however, was not so easily mended.

Good: Lots of birthday greetings. Thanks to modern technology, I received birthday messages by text, cell, land line, regular mail, email, Facebook and in person. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family.

Bad: Having my brother point out that I am now the same age as Grandma, who's been turning 29 for the past 50 years or so. No one knows how old Grandma actually is. We're not even sure Grandma knows how old she is anymore. Maybe I'll just go ahead and claim 30.
