While most people did their year in review posts a week or so ago and made unmaintainable promises to themselves to not eat greasy food or to exercise more, we were busy with Jacob's birthday, sick kids, and school selection. So we missed the boat, and now we have no promises to break. But this week as I celebrated yet another birthday, I realized that this blog is now one year old. I also realized that we really like to use the word surreal.
Last year, if you had told us the way we were going to spend my birthday this year, we would probably have laughed at you. (Lisa would have done it to your face, but I am nicer than that.) So here is a short list of things about my birthday that were great, but were inconceivable a year ago when we started this blog:

2. I haggled with a shopkeeper in Tijuana, Mexico, over the price of this Rolex so that I could actually know what time it is and look pretentious while doing it. When I replaced the battery I saw that it was stamped, "Made in China" on the inside cover. And upon closer inspection of the face, I noticed the words "Japan Movt." So who really knows where my Fauxlex came from. It's still awesome.3. We took in a double feature (Yogi Bear and True Grit) at the San Diego drive-in movie theater. Unremarkable you may think, but this was surprising for three reasons. (A) Last year we did not own an SUV to watch movies from the back of. (B) It's January, people. And the weather is wonderful. Drive-ins are rare gems, and when you do find them, they're usually only open in the summer. And (C) Last year in January we were still dreaming of places far more exotic than the border. I was imagining a birthday spent somewhere like Mongolia or Malawi or, at the very least, southern or central Mexico and not half in Tijuana, half in San Diego.
What's in store for 2011? Good question, but I hope that it is as exciting and unexpected as the past year has been.
Happy first birthday to our blog.

Happy Birthday, Chris! Great blog and sounds like you had a lot of fun! Makes me wonder too, what will be in store for you next year???
ReplyDeleteP.S. I have enjoyed your blog all year and so glad you started it last Jan. Keep 'em coming!
Happy Birthday again. Your post brought laughter: only 1/2 of our couple wanted Mongolia, bec. I do agree with you it does sound exotic! Love the drive-in... maybe should start one here in Lome!
