The Practice Move

We moved this week, and it wasn't to Mexico. With just 7 weeks until we go international, we boxed up all our possessions, well, the ones not in storage anyway, and moved across Oakwood's campus. Believe me, it was not by choice. The last thing I wanted to do was to cram an extra move into this year. Three moves in one year is a lot, even for us.

I contemplated putting the chain on the door and refusing to budge, but since Chris isn't licensed to practice law in Virginia and therefore isn't up-to-date- on our "squatter's rights," I sucked it up, and we moved our 700 lbs or so of stuff from the B building to the D building. And when I say I sucked it up, I mean I pitched a huge fit first. Scratch that. There were three fits actually.

It all started on Monday, Mom's last full day with me. You see, those lovely orange pipes that were installed a couple of weeks ago needed to be covered by boxes and then painted. In order for that to happen, we received notice via the dreaded note in the door that we had to be out of the apartment from 9 to 5 on two consecutive days, but, for our convenience, a day unit would be provided upon request. When I sent Chris to get me the key to the day unit at 6 p.m. on Monday, he came back with only a business card. And I guess that's when the week started to fall apart for me.

My exasperation over not having immediate access to my day unit led to the unhappy revelation that we would be asked, well, more like forced, to move from our apartment in early November, so they could turn it into a three bedroom unit. Apparently the young guy over renovations didn't realize that this is not the best thing to tell a postpartum mother of three who is about to move out of the country for the first time. Let's just say I wasn't as enthusiastic over his newly renovated unit "offer" as he was in making it. I think his exact words were: "I'd like to offer you a brand new renovated unit." My response: "I don't want one." His face fell. His boyish charms weren't going to work on me. I wasn't going to be easy. He said, "Well, this move is going to happen." And then I kicked him in the head. Okay, so I didn't, but I thought about it. Don't tell Jacob. I'm trying to teach him not to say violent things. You're only allowed to post them on the internet.

In the end, Oakwood won, but not without a fight and not without hearing every single complaint I've been mostly keeping to myself for the past eight months, like the big green spot in our television and our lack of autonomy over our thermostat. So maybe Mr. Davies didn't deserve the brunt of my frustration over an incredibly hot apartment and noisy work crews everywhere plus my sheer exhaustion of having nursed sick children for the past two weeks, but it was his timing that sucked. He tried so hard to reason with me, but I just kept telling him, "I don't care. Do it better." Poor guy. I think I need to bake him some cookies.

Because in the end, he did do it better. Yes, we still had to move, but we moved sooner rather than 3 weeks before the BIG move. He had his moving crew arrive promptly as scheduled, and they did a wonderful job moving all of our stuff. They need cookies too. And half of our blackout curtains have been installed already. I probably shouldn't have told everyone I have those, since apparently they are a hot commodity at Oakwood. Oops. You didn't hear it from me...

I'm trying to think of this as a great opportunity to go through all of our things before I have to pack it all up again for Mexico. Oh, the power of positive thinking. I'm almost there.

Our "fancy" (Jacob's words) new apartment. It currently does not look "fancy," since we are up to our ears in boxes. I tried to hide as many as I could for the pictures.

The crystal lamps. Notice what we did with one of the boys' lamps.

  1. That looks nice. If only you could have had that from the beginning. I like the new furniture. The couch particularly.
However, it is totally lame that you had to move all of your stuff.
    Oh Oakwood.

  2. See, I would embrace a movie. I just cannot get over how much better the remodeled units look when compared to the 1980's Motel 6 theme of the others.

  7. Just curious, I have heard that all the units have washer/dryer now. Is that true?

Also, loved all your costumes! Can't wait to see this year's.

  8. It is true that all the units have a washer and dryer, which is great, but the machines are smaller than average. They are a stackable set installed in the master closet, so you do lose some storage space. Just FYI, the refrigerator is much bigger and can hold 3 gallons of milk in the door. The bigger fridge is probably my favorite part of the renovations--less trips to the grocery store!

  9. That sounds great! A larger fridge would be nice. Thanks for the info. A friend and I were chatting and also wondering where the door is to connect the studios and two bedrooms in the new three bedroom apartments. Is it in the master bedroom of the two bedroom? We both stayed there right at the beginning of the PCS program and are interested in the changes. I am trying to decide between Pearson Square and the original Oakwood FC location. I like the kid friendly, FS neighborhood feel of the FC location but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around what a three bedroom will look like there.

  10. The door is cut into the master bedroom of the two bedroom apartment, and they have switched the master with the kids room. So basically, each apartment has 2 balconies and 2 doors into the hallway. The studio apartment is still a studio apartment. You have 2 complete kitchens and 5 (yes 5) televisions in the 3 bedroom apartments. They installed a motel style double door between the two bedroom and the studio, so that if need be, they can still be used separately. I think the set up would be better for a teenage kid, but it would be difficult (at least for me) to leave small children in what seems like a "bachelor pad." I'm not sure when you are coming, but if it's any time soon, just be aware that Oakwood Falls Church is a construction zone right now, and probably will be for at least 6 more months. We love it here because it's great with small kids; they have activities almost every day of the week, and all my friends and the kids' friends are here. So, it's a toss up. People at Pearson Square can still come use all the amenities here and participate in the activities, but it's not as convenient as just walking out your door. D building is the only one that is supposedly completely done with the renovations. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  11. I'm in building D as well. We might be neighbors! :) I hope you like the new digs!

  12. Thanks Lisa! That helps a ton. We'll be there next summer. Our kids are bigger (littlest one will be almost 4 by then) so we'll just have to see how we feel about it I guess. Your detailed description is a huge help though. I admit I might like the idea of taking the studio for ourselves and keeping the door shut during the day and just hanging with the kids in the 2 bedroom. That way at night I could retreat to my clean room/living room/studio no matter what craziness happened that day.

I always made them take away the TVs (except for the one in the living room). Couldn't stand having that many blank screens looking at me. We'll see if they're still nice about it this time around :)

  14. FIVE televisions?! And I thought our THREE were excessive. (The concierge told me today I should just go ahead and ask Oakwood to come pick them up. . . I'm afraid they would "misplace" them and I would have to pay.)

The furniture looks nice. That's probably my ONE complaint about Oakwood. Our black furniture is so shoddy, that we've already broken 2 dining room chairs. We're not huge people either. It was just we hadn't learned yet that we have to tighten the screws on the bottom of the chairs every day, otherwise they start wiggling and then, sit at the wrong angle, and they break. Praying that we have sturdy chairs overseas.
