The funny thing about September is that it's gone. Months have a way of
disappearing when you get busy with major life changes, like moving
again. One day you're all, "We have six weeks left in Tijuana. Plenty
of time to get everything done." And then you're like "Oh fiddle
sticks. We leave in 10 days. Guess I should start sorting our crap
into piles."
But really, no one likes to sort their stuff into piles. That's
like-- work--that you don't get paid for. That's why I've decided to
update you on what we've been doing this month in the hopes that Chris
sorts all our crap while I pretend to be busy doing important work on
the computer. So here goes. Just for fun, pretend I'm telling you in
one long breath--like those people that never punctuate on Facebook.
We took the boys to the Delmar Racetrack (because they told us they
were giving away stuffed horses and had free face painting and rock
climbing and stuff and we're suckers for anything free) but then we
felt kind of weird because we had our kids at the horse track and that
just seemed kind of redneck, (like having your baby at a bar) but really
it was just the first of many redneck places we took our kids this
month.
The circus came to town, so we took the boys
because "the greatest show on earth" doesn't come to town everyday, and the boys really
liked it (even though angry animal activists with signs booed us on the
way in), but the food was super expensive, like $12 for cotton candy.
We got Lucky fixed because he's a boy dog and he kept running off
down the street to meet up with a girl dog and get in her yard (if you
know what I mean) but then like five days later he ate his stitches out
so Chris took him back to the vet and Lucky got more stitches and the
cone of shame, but then like another five days later Benjy wanted to
play with Lucky so he took the cone of shame off and Lucky ate his
stitches out again, and Chris took him back to the vet to get sewn up
again, and Lucky had to wear the cone of shame for eight more days, but
now he's all healed and happy to be able to lick himself again.
Benjy told me that I should drive a monster truck because he really
wanted to ride around in one but I told him that I couldn't fit all of
us in a monster truck and we really couldn't take a monster truck
through the drive-through at McDonald's, but then Benjy's bus driver asked all
the kids if they liked monster trucks and Benjy raised his hand that he
did, so the bus driver gave him a flyer to go see monster trucks in Tijuana, so we
were all like, "Why not? We've never been to a monster truck rally," so
we went but they were sold out of tickets which made Benjy cry, so
Chris found some more tickets for sale for twice the price and bought
them, and we went to the rally and there were fireworks and big trucks
jumping and catching on fire and losing tires and flipping over, and it
was awesome until all the kids started falling asleep, except now Benjy
thinks I should just put monster truck tires on my SUV because there was
a corvette turned monster truck and if a corvette can be a monster
truck so can an SUV.
We went to the Maritime Museum because we hadn't been there yet and
we got to climb around on five boats including two submarines and shout
things like "Swab the deck," "Ahoy there mateys," and "Shiver me
timbers."
We went to El Vallecito, an archaeological site near
Tecate, Mexico, to see cave paintings and the boys had fun climbing on
all the rocks and hanging out with new friends who just arrived in
Tijuana, which is really kind of sad because they're really cool kids
with really cool parents, and we're about to leave.
We heard
that there are races in Tijuana where monkeys ride dogs every year on
Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 15) at the dog track and we just had to
go find out if it was true, so we went to the track and saw a weird
parade of animals and an ostrich race and exotic animals in tiny cages
that kids could get frighteningly close to, but the kids got tired so
went home, but then Chris went back and he saw that it is true that
there is a race where monkeys are strapped to the backs of dogs, but
instead of being funny it was sad because the dogs run really fast and
one of the monkeys threw up, and Chris's picture was blurry.
Andrew
and Benjy had tonsillectomies on the same day because we're gluttons
for punishment and studies have found that in most cases if you remove
the tonsils, PFAPA (which is the condition that both boys have that
causes them to run high fevers of over 104 degrees once a month every
month for 3-6 days) will be cured, and Andrew recovered in less than 24
hours, but Benjy was in pain for more than a week, but on Day 8 he was
feeling better so I sent him back to school, but then the school called
to tell me that he had blood in his mouth so I picked him up and rushed
him across the border to Rady Children's Hospital, because the one
thing that we needed to watch for was blood in the mouth, and the whole
time I felt like a horrible mother for sending him to school, but then
the doctor took one look in his mouth and said that he was fine, and we
were all relieved. And that was Friday.
Sometime in the mix of all this, I made a diaper cake for a friend's baby shower and wrapped up my job.
Pack out is Wednesday.
The end.

I don't think you're busy enough.
ReplyDeleteAnd someone really cool always arrives just as you are about to leave. It's the law.
Contact me when you are in the area if you need help or anything. Do you know where you are staying already? Changing schools in October is such a pain, isn't it?
I think you could have squeezed in a camping trip. But that will be homeleave, right? Best of luck for packout -- at least it will be over with soon -- I love that feeling when the packout is just DONE and life becomes simple again for a little while.
ReplyDeleteI can barely breathe just reading this. Good luck with the next ten days.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Jack, we will be moving wherever you are...so you better go someplace good. :)
Wow! The monster truck pics crack me up with the boys out cold during the excitement. Loved the blog. It was fun reading about all the events at one time. Good job.
ReplyDelete"and Chris' picture was blurry" was an absolute perfect end to that particular story :-). Good luck with pack out. Home leave will seem like a vacation compared to your last month in TJ! Oh, wait...
ReplyDeleteI found your blog by googling "tijuana, funniest place on earth" haha, and i reached this post http://polillo-family.blogspot.mx/2010/11/managing-expectations.html then i discovered that your family decided to live in Tijuana. I must say: "wow!"... Your story is really interesting. I went to that place like 3 days ago, like a student-tourist (i'm from Chihuahua, México) and oh well, what can i say? Is easy to love this great city. Hope your next home is as good as Tijuana...
