The Dirty Look

They say that a child's personality is set by the age of three. A personality can be tweaked over time, but the core essence of a person is determined during their toddler years. Scary.

Benjy will be three years old in three weeks.

And Benjy is the master of the dirty look.

Don't get me wrong, Benjy is a very sweet little boy. He gives lots of hugs and kisses and likes to share and play with his friends. He is bright and inventive. But Benjy is stubborn and shy, and he knows what he likes and what he doesn't like. And often what Benjy doesn't like is being talked to when he's not ready, especially by strangers. And that's when Benjy pulls out his secret weapon--the dirty look.

Benjy's dirty look is so intense that, most of the time, I can't help but laugh when I see it. As a result, he has adapted it for comedy. All we have to do is say, "Benjy, give him the dirty look," and he does, instantly, without cracking a smile, until we tell him to stop. Then he giggles hysterically at his own antics.

Realizing the laughs that Benjy gets with his dirty look, Jacob has tried and tried to pull it off. He practices in front of the mirror, and he practices it on us. But Jacob is too much of a clown and can't keep a straight face. This picture shows both Jacob and Benjy giving me the dirty look.

As a solution, Jacob has turned Benjy into a weapon, telling him to give people the dirty look whenever it seems appropriate. Together, they make quite a team.

In other news, Andrew has learned to laugh.
